Essential Rules of the Road

The Basics

Driving is on the right side of the road. Seatbelts are strictly mandatory for all passengers, both in the front and back seats. Using a mobile phone while driving is illegal unless you have a hands-free system.

Speed Limits

Speed limits are heavily enforced by radar and cameras. Generally, limits are 50 km/h in urban areas, 90 km/h on two-lane highways, and up to 120-130 km/h on major motorways (Otoyol).

Alcohol Limits

The legal blood alcohol limit for drivers of private vehicles is 0.50 promil (0.05%). For commercial vehicle drivers and drivers with trailers, the limit is strictly 0.00%. Random breathalyzer checkpoints are very common, especially at night and in tourist areas.

In Case of an Accident

If you are involved in a collision, do not move the vehicles until the traffic police (or Jandarma in rural areas) arrive, unless it is a very minor fender-bender and both parties agree to fill out a joint accident report.

Handling Traffic Tickets and Legal Issues

Traffic fines can be paid online or will be charged to your credit card by your rental company. However, if you are involved in a severe accident that results in injury or property damage, you will need legal representation. Protect your rights by finding a trusted lawyer through LetFix.
